5 Tips for the Best Cornhole Game

Have you been trying to boost your cornhole game skills? There are a lot of basic things you can do to help improve your game. Sometimes, it’s all about practice and honing in on the game. However, there are also some simple things you can do to make massive improvements.

Check out these 5 tips for the best cornhole game!

Practice, Practice, Practice

When it comes to cornhole, one of the best things that you can do is practice. Have you ever heard the phrase “practice makes perfect”? That little phrase can be applied here, just like it can be applied about anywhere else you want it to be.

Even the most seasoned players can throw a bad game, but if you take the time to practice, you can get things like your throw, your stance, and even your strategy really honed in.

We’re not saying practice will make you win every time, but it will most likely improve your skills and help you out in the long run.

Master the Shots

How familiar are you with the basic shot types of cornhole? While there are different types of shots you can make, the four that everyone needs to know are as follows.

Slider
Air mail
Blocker
Push

Once you’ve mastered these, you can move on to learning other tricks, but start here.

types of cornhole shots

These titles are pretty self-explanatory but let’s quickly define them. The slider shot hits the board below the hole and then slides up and through the hole. It’s one of the most common tactics because you are less likely to overthrow your bag.

Next, you have air mail. It’s a really hard shot. It’s a hole in one. Basically, you toss that bag and it flies right through the hole with no bounces. This will take the most work to master.

A blocker is used to block your opponents from sliding. You strategically land on the board with the intent that other players can slide without sliding your bag in too.

And that leads us to push. Push is when a blocker bag is slid through the hole or pushed out of the way by another shot.

All in the Form

When you’re playing cornhole, you need to maintain proper form throughout the game and with each throw that you make if you want your toss to get that little bit of arc it needs and have a clean shot.

Your form starts with getting a firm stance in your feet. Plant those feet to keep your balance as you force the throw. Try making sure you evenly spread your weight through your stance and keep it that way.

You can take a small step if needed, but don’t lose your overall form in doing so. If you get your stance set properly, you can maintain the form of your throw in your arms as you practice. You will find the way to toss that works for you, but it all starts in the feet.

Put Some Spin on It!

If you really want the best cornhole game, you need to learn how to put some spin on your cornhole bag. We do want to point out that you don’t want to learn how to add spin until you’ve perfected the other shots.

The whole purpose of spin is just to make sure that when your bag hits the hole, it actually goes into the hole and doesn’t try to bounce out.

Spin will cause the bag to land flat at the board because of the way that it rotates in the air. We know it sounds a little backward that spin will help your bag land flat, but that really is the way it works.

The trick is to throw the bag flat but to be able to get some spin off your hands in the throw. It’s the perfect way to land that bag just right and hopefully score while doing so!

Relax and Enjoy the Game

We know you’re playing to win. It can get pretty serious.

But here’s the thing.

If you play while you’re more relaxed and just enjoy the game, you are far more likely to play a really strong game.

Learn the little things that make you more comfortable and more confident while you play. Do you prefer to stay still when you throw, or do you like to take a step? Every player does this differently, so it’s up to you to make the decision.

Take a few breaths, get out of your own head, and remember everything you’ve practiced for. Don’t overthink it. Find the balance between playing seriously and just enjoying the game.

After all, we suspect you are here because you enjoy the game!

Celebrate Victory!

We have a bonus tip for you. When you have a good shot or a great game, take a moment to pat yourself on the back. You can celebrate without showing poor sportsmanship.

You can even do a little dance if you really want to. Or you can save that part until you’re home where no one can see. No judgment here!
